Steve is working with Tony
Read at Battletapes
Studio on what he hopes will become the next Altered Statesman
release. Matt Bach, Eric Williams and Ben Martin play on all tracks
using guitars, bass and drums respectively. Tony is doing a hell
of a job getting the bulk of the sounds to Battletapes' beautiful
Scully 1" eight track. Stay tuned for a preview.

Tennessee) beginning at 9:30 p.m. and featuring the Altered Statesman,
Wizard Fist, Nora Deniro and Blondes and Blacks.

Willie and Tim are into their own, but Steve has finally pulled
his head out of the sand and decided to do some shows
anyway. Willing and able adjuvants include Matt
Bach on guitar, Eric
Williams on bass and that lovable drumming curmudgeon Ben
Martin (click here
to download a poster for the show).
Check back soon as this appears to be but he beginning of a new
phase of experimentation for the Altered Statesman.

We're certain you've assumed the worst. We haven't fallen off
the face of the earth, aren't living astral or even coexisting
in a parallel universe or another dimension. We're just taking
a break before starting a new recording in June. Tingo's with
Masha, Willie's all so low and leading the Tall Boys in Lex. Steve's
uking and yodeling with the New Hardwood Legends and bringing
the noise with Dave
Cloud's Gospel of Power. Check back often for some of Steve's
new songs to be posted as they're finished. Rock, rock on.
Tuesday, March 30, 2004
A new review has been added to the Press section.
Monday, February 9, 2004
You take the good, you take the bad. You take them both and there
you have the Altered Statesman. All live shows are off for the
moment, but we have been busy. Look for several new releases soon:
Bad Signals / Selfish Themes (limited edition cassette EP / DVD,
cover photo by Joe Shea) and a version of Steve Wynn's 'Grace'
with Deanna Varagona & Tye Bellar for a Steve Wynn tribute
CD to be released in Holland.

On Monday, November 17, 2003, Altered Statesman performed at Springwater
of Nashville, Tennessee with The Ladybug Transistor. Coincidentally,
this evening was documented on video by one Michael Carter; the
tapes have since been archived and mastered, and are currently
on the shelf awaiting a release date (presumably to be released
on DVD). However, in the meantime, you are more than welcome to
download a sample recording from the DVD by visiting the Music
section.
Specifically, please find "Bobby Rose (Live)" recorded
at Springwater of Nashville, Tennesse on November 17, 2003 in
the Music section.

Keep it movin' 'til we stop improving: Steve Poulton has just
returned from a week of bassing with Andy Bodean and the Bottom
Boys. Willie is playing better than ever or maybe than anyone.
Steve Cherry is doing an excellent job as a new dad. Dave is playing
some solo shows! Our record together as the Altered Statesman
(as to be released soon by Epicene) is almost done. The recent
additions of John Turner's horns and sound wranglings are not
to be believed: the kind of shit you hear but can't see. We love
you and promise it will be worth the wait.
Sunday, August 24, 2003
Well, we're late again. Like the rest of you, the good folks at
Epicene Sound Systems are waiting patiently for our newest batch.
We promise to come correct. In the meantime, please enjoy some
still shots from our show at Springwater in Nashville.
Friday, June 27, 2003
Altered Statesman will be performing Thursday, July 10 at Springwater

Hiding? Nah, WORKING. We have songs coming out or already out
on various comps (Sponic zine is doing one in conjunction with
Midriff Records, one on Epicene Sound Systems, and one on Keith
Klein's Dayton After Dark) and are putting the final touches on
a 10- song full length to be released by Epicene in a month or
so. Keep tuned to the shows page. We'll be out and about before
you know it.

Everything's gonna be alright this morning: Yes I know. Cold weather
means the Statesman have more time to hit tape, but hard. Looks
like there are some actual opportunities to release some of the
new songs we've been slow simmering in Willie's living room. As
always it'll be something new and something blue, but borrowed?
Nah. Keep tuned to the site for the evidence. Love to the lovers.

Altered Statesman with John Turner: Sunday October 27 Mia's 120
S. Upper Lexington, KY. Way back in the 90s, Steve and the current
members of the Statesman (Tim Welch and Willie Eames)had a group
called Lily Pons with hornist/ sound scientist John Turner, now
living in New York City. They will gather on this night for a
performance of a different kind: John all solo and then with the
Statesman. If you've been to Mia's, you know that Sunday nights
there are about as chill as it gets. Unfortunately, the local
government feels that us "Goodtime People" should quit
early on the "Sabbath" so the show starts at 8 p.m.
See you there.
Thursday, September 26, 2002
The door keeps revolving: See that rare smile upon the Statesman's
face? He's decided that he likes it down South. The food has something
that he just found a-lackin' above the Mason-Dixon....FLAVOR!
Accompanying him on some new recordage and future liveage are
Sweet Licks Willie Eames and Tim 'Tingo' Welch. Finger licking
good ya'll. Stay tuned to the calendar and ear candy sections
of the site for the evidence.
Tuesday, August 27, 2002
Statesman duo @ Mia's in Lexington, KY 120 S. Upper: Sweet Willie
Eames (from Club Dub, not Blue Lagoon) will join Steve for some
duo-style pastoral guitar-o-rama. Sweetness is his strength, not
his weakness. They'll have twelve strings and over twelve feet
of heighth between 'em. Big fellas, big socks. Tall on tunes,
long on soul. Ralph Jones closes the show which begins at 9:30
p.m.
Wednesday, August 14, 2002
Doin' it and doin' it and doin' it slow: While Steve is in Nashville,
he's slowly working on a 'solo' CD, recorded on the hardrive,
four-track cassette and mini-disc recorder at his empty house,
inside a '61 Chrysler Imperial and at the park next to a Cumberland
River pioneer home. It's minimal and maximal at the same time.
Check back soon for some mp3 previews.

Music Business City US of Asses. Keep in touch as you always have.
I'll miss you.

We're not in this for our health anyway: The weekend's shows with
Drexel went well. We gave those hoosiers what for and they responded
in kind. Thanks to master hornist John Turner of NYC for joining
the fellows in the van. Steve is out of Dayton for the summer,
down in Nashville playing some soloesque, but will be back in
the Buckeye on the 22nd at Andyman's in Columbus, hitting the
Detour in Lexington, KY on the 25th. Two songs will be featured
(finally) on the Derailleur Records Singles Club for the month
of July. See derailleurrecords.com for details.
Monday, May 20, 2002
Another record getting more play than my face: Finally out and
about is the Cringe.com/pilation, Vol. 2 and hells yes but we
do have a number on it, along with Geraldine, Moviola, Orchestraville,
the Vincents, Di Di Mao, Ruby Vileos, Bob City and a bunch of
others. See CRINGE for more.

Gotta get loose from the noose that keeps me hanging around, so
I'm fixin' to. Check out the shows page to see where we'll be
in the next month or so. More to be added.
Friday, May 03, 2002
Ya'll leave me no choice but to respond in kind: Dayton makes
me sad. Is it just my admittedly vivid imagination or do you folks
here just hate on everything that is different from you? The fact
that most of you live in the suburbs (Hey, why not just go join
the Mormon Church? They don't like blacks or homosexuals either)
supports this theory. Whatever, I still love you. The more you
beat me, the more I shall fawn upon you. That's why I am strumming
and crooning all solo at Canal Street on Sunday at the Songwriter's
at 8 p.m. just for ya. Yeah it's a fucking ridiculous scenario
but it's better than sitting around just hatin'. Come out and
buy me a drink.
Monday, April 15, 2002
Several several awaits you there/ all about the comp purposes,
I'm swalking about, talking about. We got more shit on the shelf
than the Forrest and Main murder mart. Want you to know that the
Statesman have been asked to donate a couple for the May edition
of Derailleur Records' Singles Club. They're out of Columbus so
it's guaranteed safe, even for you Daytonians. We promise you
won't have to think too hard or even look beyond the borders of
your great state to enjoy 'em. Advanced students will have the
skills and enough fingers to count the chords. Yeah, two free
ones and great art for you oh-so-deserving folks in Ohio and beyond
at www.derailleurrecords.com, coming 5/01. We've one working its
way out on a cringe.com compilation next month, as well. Thanks
to all who sent in for the Sugary Tea cassette compilation. We've
a few left so holler if you needs. We appreciate you and your
continued support, even if we don't comprehend.
Sunday, April 14, 2002
I promised not to tell our drummer's ladyfriend that we were up
until the birds began to sing back to us and the sun came up on
our rubbery mugs after Friday's show at High On Rose in Lexington,
KY. Thanks again to Steve and Yuka and the fellas in the Hub (nice
van, ya'll) for having us, and to all the folks that showed to
hear us boom-bap and croon (Gordon G., Chan, David White, J.T.
from NYC, Carla B. and Tingo, especially good to see ya'll). Frankie:
Sorry I missed you. Good luck in France. I know you'll represent.
To my brother, Joey B.: Thanks for allowing us to take over your
place and letting us play your great guitars (Dude, why do I always
get stuck on mandolin, am I your clown?)and 78's. As usual, you
outlasted us all. "The moon grows pale as I sit here, each
little star seems to whisper and say that your true love has found
a new love, and now she's far far away". To the Tally-Ho:
CHANGE THE OIL IN THE FRYER. Okay Julie, we kept your boy up,
but we weren't drinking very much and definitely not smoking,
I swear. A couple new pics from EL Diablo and an MPEG from our
sparsely attended testification with Drexel at Galaxy Discs in
Hamilton are now up.

BUSFARE TO KENTUCKY by Skeeter Davis is one of my all-time favorite
country songs. Coincidentally, the always courteous folks at Greyhound
have one-way adult fares from Dayton, OH to Lexington, KY for
only $32.25, probably less if you happen to be a veteran or active
member of any branch of our nation's military! It's a lovely 2
hour and 45 minute ride- a great opportunity to make new friends!
Maybe tomorrow we'll just hop the Hound, leave the driving to
them, just party, you know? Our show with the Hub is at High On
Rose, 301 E. High St. in Lexington, KY at 10 p.m. sharp. Need
more info? Call Yuka @(859)388-9999

Every wide spot in the road: The Altered Statesman (along with
our friend Mortified Mike) are down in Hamilton at Galaxy Discs

at Taffy's in Eaton with the Brazilian Army of God and Todd Weidner
of Shrug at 8:00. Ya'll come.
